Smelling Like a Rose

Well, I finally went before the judge. I pleaded guilty and got basically a slap on the wrist. I was facing some serious jail time. If I went to trial, I was looking at a felony count and anywhere from five years probation to two to ten years in prison. Third offense DWI. I paid a lawyer major bucks and he put me on a program to straighten myself out and get sober.

It worked. I haven't had a drink in six months. We reached a plea agreement with the judge. The DA reduced the charge to a second offense misdemeanor. As part of the deal the judge said she would set the terms of probation.

The state sets minimums on some of the probation terms. For me, I was looking at 5-30 days jail time, at least 80 hours community service, one year license suspension, attending AA, DWI repeat offenders' class and substance abuse education classes. The judge must have gotten laid good on Valentine's Day. She waived the jail time and the community service. That's unheard of. I still have to take the repeat offenders class and my license is suspended. AA is a joke. I'll probably not have to take the substance abuse classes since I already completed a course. This turned out better than I could have hoped for. Shit, my second offense was worse than my third. As my lawyer has told me, I can't ever get a fourth. At that point they would just lock me up.

Good night,
Juan Pablo III
